The Purpose of Leadership

A wise leader knows that she excels by allowing life’s flow. She does not cling to control or fixed plans. Instead, she paints a vision with clear intentions and allows the intersection of multiple paths to become one for corporate movement toward the vision. Doing this, she removes the restrictions from the natural process of how the circumstance unfolds and makes room for all to grow in accord with their individual paths.

Virtues rather than control; values instead of rigidity; compassion, not selfish glory—they pave the way to successful results.

To lead is not to control, nor is it ownership. The privilege is for guiding the growth of others as all of your individual paths unfold with the help that the experience of the journey provides.

Let go of the notion that you control events, time and people. You control only yourself, and when done well, you are a beacon for others.

The wise leader knows the true purpose of a corporate agenda: to focus on your own becoming while allowing the becoming of others as you all journey on life’s flow.

LIVING THE TAO: Today, reflect on your influence. Do you try to make people do as you want, or have you created space for them to grow toward their highest self? Do you try to make people fit for your own agenda or do you allow them to flourish in alignment with their purpose? Consider where change is required in you.

My 2018 focus is to intentionally live the Tao Te Ching. This is my second reading of Stephen Mitchell’s translation. I share my daily interpretations hoping to inspire you to do the same.
