The nature of a thing gives way to its capacity. For example, a plant that is rooted is prepared to receive nutrients; a space that is empty is prepared to receive a filling substance.

You can avoid unnecessary trouble by applying use according to an object’s nature.

Likewise, when you are in flow with life according to your nature, you are able to flourish in your becoming.

The wise does not force water to be gold, or a dove to be an eagle. She appreciates a thing for what it is and maximizes it according to its nature.

She does not clasp to the thought of what something ought to be. Instead, she shows deep care and respect for all things, allowing them to flow according to their own nature.

LIVING THE TAO: Today, as you hear yourself talking about what should be, consider releasing your preconceived idea and allow whatever or whomever to be as they are.

My 2018 focus is to intentionally live the Tao Te Ching. This is my second reading of Stephen Mitchell’s translation. I share my daily interpretations hoping to inspire you to do the same.
