Humility is a leader’s strength. In order to be above, one must be below.

The wise leader governs well when the people feel equal to the leader.

The wise leader governs well when manipulation is absent.

The wise leader is confident in her unique attributes and is not compelled to compare herself to others.

The sea does not demand recognition for its role. All streams flow to it because of how it presents—confidently below. Likewise, the wise leader. She is genuinely esteemed not because of her role, but because of her how.

As I read Stephen Mitchell’s translation of the Tao Te Ching daily, I reflect and document my interpretation with the intention of living the Tao.
