So be it! See to it!

Those were Octavia Butler’s destiny proclamation words. I’m not big on novels, and she was an author of novels, so I learned about Ms. Butler after her passing.

My first interaction with her proved that she was a woman of conviction. She believed in her abilities, gifts and talents.  Apparently, she wrote her experiences before they happened. Specifically, on her notebook she wrote,

Amazingly, Butler would soon find the kind of success she wrote about not long after writing down these affirmations. Many of her novels, including “Clay’s Clark” and “Kindred,” were at the tops of bestseller lists around the world, and earned her honors and accolades including an induction into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. In 2006, in memory of her death, the Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship was founded, providing Clarion Writers’ Workshop scholarships for young writers of color…Butler will be honored in a year-long series of events and exhibitions in Los Angeles celebrating her life and her work. Talk about inspiring.

Ms. Butler’s story inspired me to remember a mantra I lived by in my fearless 20s: make a plan and execute it.

I call our early 20s fearless because that tends to be when we are quite optimistic about our future until the reality of having a job, raising a family and paying off debt/bills set in. Something happens then. The increase of debt, financial needs of our family and reliance on the week to week or biweekly paycheck invites in the fear of not having our perceived security, and as time passes along, our dreams of our youth begin to wither.

But, Ms. Butler’s experience reminds us that this doesn’t have to be the case.

Belief in what’s in you, works!

You can still dream. You can still pursue your goals. And equally important, you have the power to speak life into your goals.

Her story inspired me to remember, and now I want to inspire you by asking you to affirm, I AM confident in my ability to speak my goals to life.
